Maskne - How It Is Caused & How To Prevent It?
With Face Masks being a part of our daily lives now, a lot of acne problems have been observed recently. The term maskne has started to get attention everywhere and those who don’t know, what it actually means - when acne is caused because of wearing a mask, it is called Maskne. So how can we avoid it?
How is this Maskne caused?
Covering the face for a long time creates constant rubbing of the masks against our skin causing micro-tears, which allow easier entry for bacteria and dirt to clog up our pores. So, bacteria, the congested skin, friction from the fabric, and general skin irritation causes breakouts. Acne and breakouts usually tend to occur if there is a lack of oxygen to the skin and extra oil or build up on the skin.
How can you Prevent Maskne?
Some simple steps to help manage maskne includes:
1. Choosing the right fabric
These days you get to see masks in many fabrics. Of course, being protected from the virus is the most important thing when choosing a face mask but if you want to specifically use one that addresses maskne, choose the one that is with a soft texture and also that avoids friction.
2. Keep your face clean
Washing your face with a cleanser twice a day and wearing a clean face cover can help your skin stay healthy. Incorporating antioxidants like vitamin C can be particularly beneficial for breakouts. We recommend using a Vitamin C mask twice a week to boost your skin with antioxidants. You must also increase the intake of Vitamin C fruits.
3. Double the layer of protection
Even though you are wearing a mask, you must apply a sunscreen daily as the rest of your skin is still exposed to elements like dirt, pollution, UV rays etc. Keeping your skin hydrated is really important and specially when you are using active ingredients that encourage cell renewal and therefore, constantly expose fresh skin.
4. Try a different kind of mask
Face mask are mostly referred to as cloth coverings, and using their varieties for skincare help address breakouts. You can use soft materials like satin to be gentle with your skin. Apart from the clothing face mask, there are other skincare face masks available as per your skin type and applying those twice a week can be fruitful.
5. Embrace the natural look
Makeup can clog the skin pores so try to limit wearing too much foundation or face cosmetics. Also, don't forget to remove these chemical based cosmetic, any residue remaining in your pores can become a major cause for breakouts.
Most of the people with oily or combination skin have experienced acne and this pandemic has increased the number drastically due to maskne. Wearing a mask for a long period of time has caused acne and breakouts. Though face coverings are made breathable these days you must take care of your skin with utmost care.

We suggest using a natural and breathable fabric like cotton, silk or satin for protection (as long as it is washable). Make sure you have a good number of masks, so that you can change them timely and always exchange them with a clean one.
